Canada discusses Arctic security, Greenland with NATO, Sweden leaders

(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held separate meetings on Wednesday with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss Arctic security, Greenland, and the situation in Ukraine, according to official statements.

In his discussion with Rutte, Carney and the NATO chief "reaffirmed their mutual commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, including Greenland," emphasizing that decisions regarding Greenland’s future "are for Greenland and Denmark to make." The two leaders also acknowledged the strategic challenges facing NATO and stressed that ensuring Arctic security, including accelerating investments in the Alliance’s northwestern flank, is the first priority.

Carney highlighted Canada’s plans to quadruple defense spending over the next decade to reinforce Arctic sovereignty. The two leaders also addressed peace efforts in Ukraine, underlining the Alliance’s role in supporting Ukraine’s security and stability.

In a separate meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Carney and Kristersson "reaffirmed the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity" and agreed that Greenland’s future should be decided by Greenland and Denmark. The discussion included Arctic cooperation, with both sides agreeing to maintain regular contact.

Carney also met with business leaders representing companies with a combined market capitalization of around $10 trillion to encourage investment in Canada’s infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, and defense sectors. He emphasized Canada’s objective to "unleash $1 trillion in investment over the next five years, while building a stronger, more sustainable, and globally competitive economy."
